The colorful Mardi Gras parade along Mead Road is one of the highlights of Oakhurst’s eclectic Porchfest, held every October.

When living in a historic neighborhood, one cannot help but feel pride about its humble beginnings, how it has remained attached to its past, and how it continues to flourish in the present.

This is the collective vibe of residents in the thriving neighborhood of Oakhurst in Decatur, GA.

Oakhurst is a vibrant community with small-town charm. Here are things about Oakhurst that are good to know:

HISTORY

Located on Decatur’s southwest flank, Oakhurst was originally envisioned as a streetcar suburb of Atlanta. In the late 19th century, a second trolley line was constructed that intersected with the existing trolley line. This intersection was in the business section of Oakhurst. Since then, it became a preferred destination among Atlanta dwellers who wanted a quick getaway from the din of the city.

Oakhurst’s popularity waned around the 1960s and 1970s as other nearby suburbs were also developed. However, its former glory returned in the 1980s when an initiative to build up and preserve the neighborhood’s historical character emerged. It hasn’t looked back since then.

OVERVIEW

Oakhurst may be a relatively small urban suburb but it’s among the wealthiest neighborhoods not only in the state but in the entire country. Its resident profile consists of executives, managers, and professionals, almost half of whom possess a Master’s degree at the least.

At the heart of Oakhurst are two parks – Oakhurst Park, from where the community got its name, and Harmony Park, the usual venue for local events and pop-up markets. Surrounding these two public spaces are some of the loveliest homes, many of which are vintage Craftsman builds that have retained their Old-World charm.

OAKHURST REAL ESTATE AT A GLANCE

Given the community’s historic heritage, its small-town atmosphere, and excellent schools nearby (e.g., Oakhurst Elementary School, Beacon Hill Middle School and Fifth Avenue Upper Elementary), it’s not surprising that the real estate here is much sought-after. The area is, in fact, a seller’s market with homes being sold above the seller’s asking price as of June 2023. It doesn’t even take a month for a home to stay on the market before it gets snagged by a lucky buyer.

As of June, homes in Oakhurst have been sold at a median price of $1.1 million, essentially breaking the $1-million benchmark and registering the highest price point for real estate here in almost three years. To date, homes for sale in Oakhurst could go as high as $2.3 million
