In 2022, Walk Score ranked Atlanta at #21 among the most walkable large cities in the United States based on road connectivity, bike lanes, public transit, and distance to amenities.

Here you’ll find several walkable neighborhoods in Atlanta worth exploring. Take a look!

Inman Park

Known as one of the trendiest neighborhoods in ATL, Inman Park is situated along the Atlanta BeltLine, a 22-mile loop and multipurpose trail for jogging, cycling, and walking dogs. The revitalized BeltLine is also filled with colorful street art and murals.

Located just two miles east of downtown Atlanta, the neighborhood offers gorgeous bungalows and stately Victorians. When it comes to amenities, Inman Park is known as a culinary destination with popular brunch spots, steak houses, specialty coffee shops, and the Krog Street Market, which features several artsy restaurants and bakeries housed in a restored factory.

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Inman Park/Reynoldstown Station is located on DeKalb Avenue at Hurt Street, offering quick and efficient public transport.

Old Fourth Ward

Widely regarded as the best neighborhood in Atlanta, Old Fourth Ward has undergone massive revitalization with restored homes and repurposed buildings.  Located east of downtown, the neighborhood offers quick access to the Atlanta BeltLine through the Eastside Trail.

Residents can easily walk to the many boutiques and eateries in the neighborhood, including the Ponce City Market, which features a shopping mall and food hall inside the historic Sears building; and the Historic Fourth Ward Park, which offers 17 acres of green space for outdoor activities.

Midtown

Located in the center of Atlanta, Midtown offers quick access to world-class dining, shopping, and nightlife as well as green spaces and cultural institutions. Many homes are within walking distance of local attractions such as Piedmont Park, Colony Square, Fox Theater, and the High Museum of Art. There’s also convenient access to the MARTA Midtown Station

Virginia-Highland

Virginia-Highland, or VaHi, is a small, eclectic neighborhood just east of Midtown. Originally developed as a streetcar suburb, VaHi offers a fine selection of bungalows and historic homes. Its tree-lined streets are picturesque and highly walkable. Residents have ready access to several shops, restaurants, and cafes. The annual VaHi Summerfest is a popular event that features 5k races and outdoor concerts.

City of Decatur

Located about six miles from downtown Atlanta, Decatur encompasses 4.7 square miles east of the Atlanta BeltLine. Decatur features more than 60 miles of tree-lined sidewalks. Most of its 200 shops, award-winning restaurants and eateries, galleries and offices are within walking distance of the vibrant Downtown City of Decatur Square. There are tons of local festivals and events throughout the year. Also be sure to check out Your DeKalb Farmers Market and the DeKalb History Museum.

As for public transportation, there are three rapid transit (MARTA) stations within city limits. Residents also have access to Interstate 285, I-75/85, and I-20 as well as major roads like Ponce de Leon Avenue and the College Avenue Corridor.
